Liberty Village boasts a very convenient location in Toronto. In addition to the incredible events that take place in our neighbourhood throughout the year, Liberty Village’s location allows for easy access to some of Toronto’s most popular venues. For sports aficionados, the BMO field is close by; there’s seldom a scenic photo of Liberty Village that doesn’t feature the CN Tower in the background; Exhibition Place that hosts myriad national fairs, shows and large-scale events is at our backdoor; Lake Ontario and the Harbourfront open us up to a world of winter and summer water-based activities close by and Fort York remind us of the rich history of our area with a roster full of fun, cultural events throughout the year. And that’s just naming a few. Liberty Village is, without question, a great place to live! The consensus, now that UberHop has been around for several weeks, is that this great place just got a little bit greater!

Thanks to UberHop, the morning and afternoon commute for many in our area is now a bit more comfortable. Between morning and afternoon rush hour, Liberty Village residents now have the option to choose the inexpensive, ride-share service instead of travelling by streetcar, bus or other means. The $4.50 flat rate applies for both the morning and afternoon commute. Currently, UberHop is available from 7am – 10am from Liberty Village to the Financial District (for $4.50) and from 4:30 – 7:30pm from the Financial District to Liberty Village (also for $4.50).

So how does it work? Here’s what you need to do to try out or connect with UberHop:

  • Download the Uber app or update your current Uber app to access UberHop
  • Choose the “UberHop” option and select the route that corresponds with your location and destination.
  • Head to the pick-up spot.
  • Depart from the pick-up spot at the scheduled time. (You may share the vehicle with as many as 5 other people).

As an additional note, UberHop transportation has to be requested for each person travelling. If you bring people along with you to the pick-up location, it’s likely that the driver won’t be able to accommodate them, if they haven’t requested a UberHop pick-up as well.

For some there are upsides and downsides to UberHop. The biggest downside seems to be that the vehicle often won’t depart until all the passengers arrive. The payoffs for most though, far outweigh the negatives.  There’s a guaranteed seat (and a comfortable one too) on your morning and evening commute and the ride overall tends to be more enjoyable. You may even make a new friend (or five). There’s been an interest in this sort of transportation service for some time now and with previous TTC transit attempts to introduce alternate routes to and from Liberty Village failing to live up to expectations, the new UberHop service has many in Liberty Village sitting back, relaxing and enjoying a welcomed, smoother commute to work and home.
