The Artist Project – An Event for Artists and Art-Lovers

News & Events | Written on January 25, 2017

The countdown is on for one of Toronto’s most well-known and well-loved art events. The Artist Project returns for its 10th year from February 23 – 26 and the program, exhibitions and event’s features all promise that their 10th year may just be their best yet. Organizers have also chosen a great venue to accommodate this 4-day art explosion: the Better Living Centre at Exhibition Place. Villagers, an event this awesome that’s happening right in our backyard shouldn’t be missed! So, without any delay, here is what you need to know about this very cool, contemporary art fair that’s coming up in our area.

The Artist Project kicks off on Thursday, February 23 with two events: an early access preview and an opening night party. And, since one great party deserves another, Thursday’s fun will be followed by an art battle and an art battle after-party on Friday.  It’s safe to say that artists know how to have fun! Thursday’s Early Access Preview will run from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and will be open to adults who are 19 and older. As the name suggests, Thursday’s event will offer attendees a chance to be among the first to see the incredible art at this year’s fair. More than 250 artists will be displaying over 5000 works of art at this year’s Artist Project so being among the first to view the pieces at a closed gathering will certainly be a treat. And while you browse, mingle and enjoy the stunning art on display, you’ll also be able to enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres. Early Access Preview tickets are $50 at the door and $48 if purchased online. Proceeds from the sale of tickets to the Early Access event will go to Artbound’s Creative Deeds Program.Artist P- Photo from Pexels IV

Once you’ve experienced the incredible pieces being featured at this year’s Artist Project, it will be time to celebrate! The Opening Night Party kicks off at 7:00pm and is scheduled to run until 10:00pm. Cocktails will be served and, while you’re enjoying a few drinks (and the delicious bites being offered), you can meet, mix and mingle with like-minded art-lovers. The Opening Night Party will also be restricted to a 19 and older crowd and proceeds from the sale of tickets (priced at $30 at the door and $28 online) will also be donated to a charity.

Opening Night activities are only the beginning of the fun! There is lots more to experience at this year’s Artist Project! Art Battle #494 is the second day’s feature event and it will definitely be a showstopper. The battle will be on for the best work of art created in 20 minutes! Attendees watch live (and can even walk around artist easels to watch the process closer) to see incredible art being created right before their eyes! 16 artists from the fair will be chosen to participate in the Art Battle and the winner will be selected by audience vote. Art Battle will run from 7:00pm to 10:00pm on the main floor and, following this intense painting session, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase their favourite pieces through a silent auction.

When Art Battle ends, it will be time for another night of celebrating. The Art Battle After-Party begins at 10:00pm and runs until, well, “late”. Practice your harmonizing because the excitement of Artist Project will be moving from Exhibition Place right to our neighbourhood for a few hours! The Gladstone Hotel on Queen West will be welcoming the Artist Project for their memorable after-party, which will include karaoke, special guest performances, drinks and lots of creativity (it is the Artist Project, after all). The first 50 guests will get a free drink so be sure to head over early.

We’ve battled and partied and enjoyed early access to view the amazing art at this year’s Artist Project and still we’ve only just touched surface when it comes to this year’s Artist Project roster of events. The Artist Project is an incredible coming together of talented artists and people who appreciate art. The art at this year’s fair will include pieces created in a host of mediums. Art categories at this year’s Artist Project include: Photography, Collages, Encaustic, Mixed media, Textiles, Glass, Watercolour, Sculpture, Print Making, the Installation Zone, Drawing, Digital Media, Oils and Acrylic and Pastel. The hundreds of artists taking part in the Artist Project are too many to list but the Artist Project website includes a search option, so if there’s a particular artist that you’re hoping to see or purchase pieces from, you can do a search to find out if they’ll be at the event.

To get even closer to the artists, the Artist Project will also feature an “Art Chats Seminar Series”. Art Chats will take place on Saturday, February 25 and on Sunday, February 26 and will include talks with several well-known art and design experts. You can look forward to getting tips about buying art from Manny Neubacher and Anya Shor (from The Art Stylists), learn about art and test your art knowledge at a trivia event with Mark Challen and learn about street art and art in Toronto from Lilie Zendel (Manager of StreetARToronto). Entry to Art Chats is free with general admission tickets.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Artist Project’s Untapped Emerging Artist Competition. The Artist Project, with the support of DeSerres, offers a platform for student artists and self-trained artists to display their work and connect with other artists, for free. Twenty emerging artists are chosen from a pool of hundreds of applicants and the competition is open to artists of any medium. You can learn more about the finalists for the 2017 Artist Project on the Artist Project finalist webpage.

There’s no question about it: the Artist Project is an incredible event for anyone and everyone who appreciates art. Meet artists, buy pieces, or spend a day enjoying and viewing beautiful artwork at The Artist Project. On Friday, February 24, the Artist Project will be open from 11:00 am – 10:00 pm. Event hours are 11:00 am – 8:00pm on Saturday, February 25 and 11:00am to 6:00pm on Sunday, February 26. Admission to the Artist Project is free for children who are 12 and younger. Adult admission is $15 at the door and $14 online; adult tickets are $10 each if 10 or more tickets are purchased. Admission for seniors (65+) is $10 and youth (13-17) admission is $10.

There’s lots of information about the Artist Project on their website or you can visit them on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. This February, go ahead, get your art on at the Artist Project! You’ll be happy that you did.
