The Liberty Village Cares Social Fundraiser

Neighbourhood | Written on November 12, 2015

One of the wonderful things about the holiday season is the giving spirit that it awakens in many of us. It is a time for sharing and helping those in need, for volunteering and donating and, as an added bonus, one side effect of opening our hearts (and our wallets) is how great it makes us feel.

Liberty Village Cares (LVCares) is a new community organization. It was born from a shared desire by persons living in the Liberty Village area to do more to help persons in need and to make the world a better place, starting with efforts from right here in our neighbourhood. As founding member, Jagger Long explains, “I live in Liberty Village and felt as a neighbourhood we needed a forum where local business owners and residents who are passionate about community development and making a difference in the world can connect and inspire each other.”

Long created the Liberty Village Cares Facebook group in September as a first step towards realizing this vision and to meet other persons in Liberty Village who were similarly motivated. Since then, that group has grown to almost 500 members! The response to Long’s first call to action – providing Thanksgiving dinner to 50 youths who reside in Eva’s Phoenix Homeless Shelter – was great and scores of persons in Liberty Village prepared dishes, donated cutlery and decorations, delivered food, offered monetary donations and more! Liberty Village Cares even received corporate sponsorship that allowed them to offer each of those 50 young persons, a travel mug and a movie pass. This outreach effort went so well that it was featured on two live spots by CP24. Long credits the incredible work of his neighbours in Liberty Village for helping with this initiative. For him, it was really wonderful as well to be able to do this work by connecting with people in Liberty Village, many of whom he had never met before.

As their second order of philanthropic business, LVCares will be hosting a social fundraiser in Liberty Village on Friday, November 13 beginning at 7:00pm. The venue chosen for this great event is 75 E Liberty St. 25th Floor; tickets are priced at $21.30 and are available for purchase here.  100% of proceeds from this event will benefit two very worthwhile charities:  West Neighbourhood House and Parkdale Community Centre. West Neighbourhood House promotes social and personal change to build a healthy and safe society. They offer tools and opportunities for people who need assistance to regain control of their lives and take on leadership roles.  The Parkdale Community Centre is a fully accessible facility in the area that offers a range of services and activities to families and individuals in and around the neighbourhood.

Don’t forget though there is a “social” element to this fundraiser. It’s intended as a way to help two great non-profit organizations while offering attendees a chance to meet other like-minded individuals in the Liberty Village area. Alcoholic beverages will be available for a suggested donation of $5. Other snacks and refreshments will also be available. Save the date and endeavour to give back in a great way this holiday season!

Liberty Village Cares is doing great work in and around our neighbourhood and we look forward to learning about and helping with future events.
