Valentine’s (and Anti-Valentine’s) Day in Liberty Village| Written on February 10, 2017
Ours is a neighbourhood that’s also a community. There’s a warmth that colours life in Liberty Village and that transforms our neighbourhood events and activities into happy, fun, engaging, heartfelt moments in time. In essence, there’s love all year round in Liberty Village. Whether it’s a romantic kind of love or the love that you share with friends and family (or your quirky pet), there’ll be something that caters to you in Liberty Village this Valentine’s Day!
WINING AND DINING – THE LIBERTY VILLAGE LOVEBIRD VERSION
If the key to your man’s or woman’s heart is food, this first Valentine’s day activity will unlock any and every beating door. One of our favourite local restaurants invites you to celebrate this Valentine’s Day…make it Valentine’s week enjoying their “Big Love” event! From Tuesday, February 14 to Saturday, February 18, Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, located at 85 Hanna Avenue, Suite 104, will be hosting a special Valentine’s dinner event.
Enjoy the wonderful dinner dishes that you know and love at Mildred’s Temple along with glitzy cocktails and Valentine’s Day prizes. Every dish at this Liberty Village gem is as incredible as the next! Start off with a delectable mushroom skillet, then, set your heart ablaze with their juicy, slow braised bison. Or, begin by sinking your teeth into Mildred Temple’s crunchy shrimp and crab cakes and then move on to enjoy their roasted curried cauliflower dish. We don’t know about you but we’re definitely in love! And those are only a few of the options from their mouth-watering dinner menu! Following your meal, pick a heart from Mildred’s “heart string” adornment and win prizes ranging from dinner for two to prosecco to pancakes! A great evening starts with a great meal and you’ll certainly enjoy everything that Mildred Temple dishes up for their Big Love event. The full dinner menu for Mildred Temple is available on their website or you can contact them directly at (416) 588-5695 for additional information or to book a table.
WINING AND DINING — THE SINGLE LADIES (AND SINGLE GUYS) WAY
At Brazen Head in Liberty Village, Valentine’s Day is going down in a whole other way this year! In fact, once you step through their doors on February 14, there’ll only be talk of Anti-Valentine’s Day! Yup! We definitely dig it! Get away from the flowers, the candy, the oversized gifts and the totally inappropriate and outlandish public displays of affection and spend an awesome evening hanging with friends at one of Liberty Village’s favourite spots – Brazen Head. If you think that Valentine’s Day is totally overrated and you’d rather just spend your Tuesday having fun or chilling out, Brazen Head is where you should be. There’ll be lots of great drinks to go around, including $5 rotational pours and their menu never disappoints. There are also daily specials so there’ll be no need to break the bank to enjoy a weekday meal out in Liberty Village. Brazen Head’s location 165 East Liberty Street is calling you to come by on Tuesday. How will you answer?
“LOVE”LY LOCAL ACTIVITIES
We shift our focus from food to a Valentine’s-themed, partnering activity! Temple 23 Community Centre at 7 Fraser Avenue, Unit 2 will be welcoming this Valentine’s Day weekend with a Big Love event of their own! Temple 23, a Liberty Village yoga and meditation studio, is bringing back their Big Love Deluxe event that focuses on heart-centred, nurturing poses and activities. Talk about a great way to connect for Valentine’s Day!
On Saturday, February 11 doors will open at 7:00pm for the Big Love event at Temple 23, with the first activities – a warm-up, followed by ice-breakers, games aimed at connecting you with your partner, partner yoga and contact fun— beginning at 7:30pm. Starting at 8:15pm, participants will take part in a cacao ceremony that will include deep meditation and at 8:30pm there will be an energy-filled dance that, as Temple 23 explains, will lead you to “move and groove through an elemental map of dancing bliss”. We’re already feeling zen! The evening will close with a final group, free-chant that will empower participants and connect partners and participants in the room.
This Big Love event at Temple 23 will be energy-filled and will focus on the theme of wild, big love. Connect with the cosmic universe and bring a partner to join in an evening that’s all about energy and love. Tickets will be available online until February 10 for $35 or can be purchased at the door for $40. For more information about Big Love at Temple 23, head over to the Big Love event page.
Or…you could forget about couples yoga in favour of this alternative. Since the best way to turn up the heat may just be with actual heat you could stop by the hot yoga studio in our neighbourhood! Pure Yoga is a yoga practice that recently opened in our hood and they are awesome! You’ll need to read our Live in Liberty blog about them to know why: a) You should check them out ASAP b) You have nothing to lose and everything to gain from trying a class (hint: it involves something for free!) and c) We are already hooked and think that you will be too! Bring along a friend or go it solo. Either way, we bet that you’ll really enjoy it!
Save all the energy that you generated at the Big Love event or from your Pure Yoga class! You will certainly need it for the next activity in our area. The Great Hall at 1087 Queen Street West invites you to put your love (or your love of dance) to the test at the Vintage Valentine’s Dance! Don’t let the title of this event fool you, you don’t need to be a couple to attend! On Sunday, February 12 you’ll be able to hop to it with the 17-piece GTA traditional swing band! Well-known vocalist, Mim Adams along with this incredible musical ensemble will have you dancing away to the sounds of the swing era. There’ll be songs from Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee and loads more. Lindy hop your way to an unforgettable evening in our area!
The Vintage Valentine’s Dance is all about fun so if you have two left feet, you (and them) are still invited to join in this great evening. Doors will open at 7:15pm and there’ll be a free dance lesson beginning at 7:30pm! Then it will be time to swing! The GTA Swing Band begins playing at 8:30pm. Vintage dress isn’t required but, why not go all out and dress the part while you move to the music of the 40s and 50s. Tickets for Vintage Valentine’s Dance are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For more info about the dance instructors, Luis and Natalia or about this fun-filled night, visit the Vintage Valentine’s Dance event page.
For Valentine’s Day this year, why not do things a little differently? Enjoy an incredible dinner with special prizes or, hang out with friends at a popular Liberty Village spot! Attend a partnering meditation session or try out a newly opened yoga studio in our neighbourhood. Or you could head out for a boogie down, hop till you drop vintage dance. We’re spreading the love in really memorable ways this Valentine’s Day. (No chocolate, flowers or jewellery are required!)
